Club History
The Morris County Striders Running Club was born at the height of the running boom in the late 70’s. Group runs originally began from the Randolph High School but eventually moved to the present Sunday run location in Rockaway.
The club would have monthly meetings at the Randolph High School but the meetings phased out and have been replaced with event-based meetings. Each winter the club has a Breakfast Run on a Sunday in February at the Rockaway location followed by a club funded breakfast at the Hibernia Diner.
In the club’s early years a series of track races was held to promote running for youngsters. That tradition continues with a 5K summer series where the emphasis is on the kids, although adult athletes welcome the chance to race on a Tuesday evening as well.
Each summer the club has a picnic, and while not a meeting, it is a chance for members to get together with their families for great backyard fun with swimming, volleyball games, food, and drinks.
In the fall (early November) we have a marathon dinner at a local restaurant in Rockaway where members are invited to tell their most memorable marathon story. At this meeting our club officers are elected. In December we get together for a holiday party at one of our members home.
Much of the club socializing is at our group runs that have grown to four weekly runs and at the races. The club is a social running club that also loves to race. We have Open Men and Open Women’s teams and teams in all of the Masters divisions.
During the summer months, we instituted a tailgate party once a month after the Sunday run in Rockaway. After everyone has run their distance of 3, 5, 8 or more miles, we all meet up afterwards in the parking lot for a party. Many members bring drinks and baked goods while other buy them. Either way, its good food, good fun, and a chance to meet the other Striders members. For those who are thinking about joining the club, this is a good opportunity to see what we're all about. Contact Steve at [email protected] for information on our next tailgate party.
Members range from families with children who run, to individuals in their 70's. Some run only for fitness and camaraderie while others are serious racers. All are welcome.
